KCOBA (Atlanta)- Annual Scholarship Fund Dance

By Everton Barrett

Everton Barrett - President KCOBA Atlanta

The first annual KCOBA-Ga Scholarship Fund Dance got off to a memorable start and the future of this event looks sparkling judging from the support the Community has offered so far. What started out as a cold crisp December Saturday night in Atlanta,  warmed up in a hurry and by midnight it was steamy hot. Over 140 residents and Old boys turned out nattily attired to enjoy the sounds of DJ Wayne and the “Migraine” sound machine. And they weren’t disappointed. He rocked the floor all the way until 2:30 am Sunday morning. Taking the crowd back to  the Ska through Rock Steady, Roots Rockers through the Electric slide straight up to “Steppin in the name of Love”. The floor was never empty and many a dancer echoed the words  “the young fella sure knows his music”. The venue was lovely, thanks to Mr & Mrs Everett McNish who secured their clubhouse on our behalf and made the evening all possible. By the time the bewitching hour was upon us and it was time to shut it down, KCOBs had to quietly usher folks out the door with the promise that we will make next year just as nice. Folks wanted more and everyone expressed thanks for the lovely evening and the KCOB hosts could all go home knowing they hosted a splendid evening for family, friends and supporters.

The event manager, Mr Glen Laman did his usual superb job of preparation and execution and the night unfolded with never a glitch. The event proved successful both in entertainment and financial capacities. The membership of the Atlanta KCOB should be thrilled to know they can come together and flawlessly host an event such as this, while contributing to the bottom line of making the youngsters at Kingston College enjoy a more secure and rewarding stay at the college. The challenge ahead now is how to smartly and effectively disburse the funds collected on deserving young men without the usual doubts and trepidation that accompanies the daunting task of sending funds to Jamaica. It was recommended that the KCDTF be the vehicle to which we hitch our wagons and let them take care of the details. The membership should determine if that is the best course at the next monthly meeting. Until then the KCOBs of Georgia will continue to work earnestly towards capturing the hearts and minds of people everywhere who understand the importance of playing a pivotal role in the development of the youngsters who are the future of our beloved Island.
