WHEN SINCE? SOCIETY HAS CHANGED

Despite the fact that I am a Christian, I find it difficult and even strange, both to me and to others to do certain things I see other children doing in my age group - even though I was 18, as of November 05, 2006. I am still not surprised but rather wondering when since has our society changed? When have certain things, which are the norm or of acceptance have become unacceptable and vice versa? When is it that a student living in the “ghetto” who speaks Standard English is associated with practicing a homosexual lifestyle? When has it become that if a male student has a male friend (his age group) who visits him everyday, probably to chat, play games or study, both are classed as being gay by the on looking community, quite a similar situation for the females? When has society accepted males piercing their ears, nose and other body areas, as well as wearing female’s garments? When since has our society endorsed certain lewd and explicit activities? When is it that if you are a Christian, your are classified as a “bait” if you refuse to dance the style of dances danced at the dancehall, even if it is simply a friend’s birthday party? When since males want to wear hairstyles as females do? OR just simply put it, WHEN HAS OUR CHERISHED, CHRISTIAN STRUCTURED SOCIETY CHANGED? OR is it just ridiculous to think that the mentality of moral standards has changed among members of the Jamaican Society.

  I support the latter.

I have always shared the view that as the older generation passes away, the new generation will bring its new morals and values into society, and which sometimes cannot even be classified as morals or values that can be endorsed.  The Jamaican society has not changed for the better but for the worse. The worse, in terms of fulfilling the negatives of the bible, our most sacred recording.  Come to think of it, Christians now, stand up for ‘any and anything’ and they themselves are behaving and acting as the “sinners” or unsaved. There are no distinct differences between Christians and unsaved, as Christians go to the lottery shop and fornicate too, just to name a few. Once again the new generation is who I yap at and those Christians who are/can be found guilty.

I will be truthful, while older folks admire young men who try to master the English Language; the youths (in my terminology, I mean age 16 – 35) have not endorsed the same. More so, they classify these youths as “gay” or in more derogative manner. Now it is evident and without a doubt that if you use the so called “gangsta” language(not gangster), start to live the “gangsta” style of living, walk the “gangsta” style of walking and dress like a gansta, you will be more easily accepted in your community than a little man who decides to live the upright life. Now if you endorse the latter you are classified as trying to behave better than others. However many are cut above the rest and will not stoop to such low regards. For me, I owe that to KC.  Many persons may not like you for who you are and what you stand up for, but its best if you advocate for something that you believe in rather than nothing.

It may seem to be a societal thing, yes, but I have seen the very same things I speak of,    being incorporated into K.C.  Sometime last week, I was leaving school and saw an 11th grade student, wearing an earring. I stopped him and ask for it to be removed, but somehow I had to ask, why you wear it? His reply was that “it looks good.” I cannot seem to understand how a man thinks something worn by females makes him look good and if so, in what sense. Is the sense of it transforming him into a female or otherwise – you tell me. His psyche is set up different. I watch and see males turn themselves into females, one way or the other and not to mention by “bleaching” their skins. Such unhealthy practice should not be endorsed but even as I stand I communicate with boys who bleach their skin at KC. I am not implying that I discriminate, - I don’t, but it pains my heart to see the lives of our youths go to squander.  Well, as I always say, you learn from your mistakes. But, such mistakes should never be made, changing the way God fashioned you.

I really think there is a level of insanity in our society today.  Not only have males started to pierce their ears but also nose, tongue and eyelashes. What is their affinity with piercing their body parts?

When I hear of school girls having sex on buses, my heart cries: What disgrace?!!! These people have no shame whatsoever. Sex ought to be sacred and private. What is wrong mentally with these youngsters who participate in these activities? Or is it that they just don’t care.

I love Jamaica, I enjoy the beauty of this country, but when it comes to the people, I really think something has gone wrong.  Our deejays and artists are endorsing the slack lifestyle, parents are doing the same, and society has done very little to reverse the situation. Then what can a school as Kingston College do to curve the situation? Do what you have always done; curve the lives of juveniles into young mature men ready for the world experience.  I am proud of my school, I am proud of the students who attend the school, but I am not proud of the generation and the factors that have caused this change to weaker moral structure as well as values.

FORTIS FORVER, THIS SCHOOL WILL ALWAYS BE ON TOP, NO MATTER WHAT!!!!
