On a Sad Note - Michael Mordecai, former President of AJA passed away Wednesday 3/15/06
Michael Mordecai
Michael (Mike) Mordecai, civil engineer, entrepreneur, sportsman and longtime community leader, passed away Wednesday, March 15. Many of you may know of Mike through his MORDIM4 e-mail ID, the ID from which he kept members of our community updated on issues relevant both to Jamaica and to our Atlanta community.
As an entrepreneur, Mike helped fuel the success and expansion of a number of local businesses. That he did in the early nineties as he featured many Caribbean businesses in Green Pages, his directory publication service. He was also a successful real estate investor.
With his community service in Atlanta dating back to the late seventies, Mike basically paved the way for many Jamaicans from a social standpoint. He was instrumental in bringing competitive soccer, cricket and dominoes to our community. He also played significant roles in the formation of two sports organizations, and was the spark behind many local and intercity soccer and domino tournaments, with competitive intercity tours to cities such as Chicago, Houston, New York, Fort Lauderdale, and elsewhere.
Mike was a past president of the Atlanta Jamaican Association (AJA). In fact, it was Mike who designed the AJA logo. In the mid-eighties Mike played a major role in the compilation and development of AJA’s mailing list, the most comprehensive and extensive direct-mail list of Caribbean personalities in Atlanta at the time.
It almost goes without saying that within the past three years Mike developed what is now known to be the most extensive e-mail distribution list of Caribbean personalities in Atlanta. As many of you know, he used that list to keep us up-to-date on everything from an Air Jamaica sale, to the emergency telephone numbers for the HERO units on Atlanta’s highways.
The family will receive friends 6:00 – 9:00 pm Friday, March 24 at Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home, 4347 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur, Georgia 30034. Telephone number for the funeral home: 404-241-5656.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD 12:00 noon Saturday, March 25 at The Episcopal Church of The Holy Cross, 2005 S. Columbia Place, Decatur, Georgia. Interment will follow at Hillandale Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum, 6201 Hillandale Drive, Lithonia, Georgia 30058.
