It is impossible for an unmotivated person to encourage himself to do work, while the motivated (but undisciplined) person may strongly feel inclined to work but he may procrastinate. A motivated, disciplined person, who simply lacks a sense of determination, does possess the capacity to do work, but will lose focus of his goal at some point in time. Over time his patience may run dry, so at the end of the day he ends up frustrated.
I strongly believe that a combination of all three: Motivation, Discipline and Determination are some of the key ingredients to my success. The “motivation factor” is what encourages you in the first place to do work. The “discipline factor” is needed to ensure that you actually follow through (with your feeling of motivation) and do work. The “determination factor” is what gives you the endurance, and must be in place to ensure that you don’t lose sight of your goal.
The success that I have experienced over the years is not due to me alone, and so first and foremost, I must thank God. I am a firm believer that nothing is acquired without His grace and so He is at the head of my good fortunes. Secondly, my relatives and friends, especially my parents, contributed greatly to my success. More than anyone else in my life, they were responsible for my motivation and guidance. There were times when it seemed as if I forgot about my goals; they were always there to make sure I stayed focused, and for that I am deeply happy. Last, but definitely not least, I thank my teachers. Although my exposure to teaching outside of Kingston College and Vaz Preparatory School is limited, I can confidently say that Kingston College has some of the most special teachers I have ever crossed path with. I strongly believe that the dedication which they show towards their students is second to none, and their dedication is also a large part of my success.
Contrary to what people may think about me, I am not a complete bookworm, or nerd. I have seen first hand that all work and no play indeed makes jack a dull boy, and so I like to participate in whatever activities I can. I was the deputy headboy for Kingston College for the academic year 2005/2006. I was also involved in the Tourism Club, Key Club (in which I served as the chairman of the membership development committee), Students’ Council (in which I served as the Public Relations Officer) and Interact Club (in which I served as the Secretary). I also play a lot of video-games and football. For the past two years, Kingston College held a football competition, The Wally Johnson Knock-out Competition, in honour of our past principal, Mr. Ivan “Wally” Johnson, in which all the major clubs (like Key Club) participate. In the last competition, I ended up top goal scorer with 5 goals in 4 games. In the summer of 2005, I also volunteered my services at the Bustamante Children’s Hospital where I offered 105 hours.
I am currently at the University of the West Indies studying medicine. Eventually, I want to pursue brain or heart surgery. My philosophy in life is simply this: “Through hard-work and dedication, any obstacle can be over-come”
