Luciean Creary is KC’s 81st Headboy

Ambition is the key to success - Luciean’s motto

Luciean Creary

Choosing the KC headboy for the 2006/2007 academic year was not an easy task for the panel comprised of  newly appointed Principal, Rupert Hemmings, his deputy, Keith Bryan and a selection of senior teachers. The top five sixth formers (13th graders) that came before them for interviews, were elected by their peers in the first round run-off, and were a formidable crop--some of the finest in many years.

The front runner was Ryan Phillips, the brilliant and popular Interschool Christian Fellowship President. Then there was President of the Daily Observer Teenage, Brandon Allwood.  He flew back from Switzerland in time for his interview. His credentials were impeccable--he had strong grass roots connections, and being the students’ representative on the Board of Governors, helped strengthen his hands and bowled over his interviewers. Not to be ruled out were:  Omar Clarke another popular Daily Observer Teenage writer (recall the article on the Fortis brand name) and a student who bore the names of UN Secretary General and the Pan Africanist and former President of Ghana as well as former Mayor of Atlanta:  Kofi Nkrumah Young.

Lest we forget, there was also the wily politician but not the Greek bearing gifts, Luciean Creary. .He it was that emerged as the 81st Headboy of Kingston College. The brilliant, reliable, astute, all-round visionary and mobiliser will have Brandon Allwood (Melbourne campus) and Kofi Nkrumah Young (Clovelly campus) as his two deputies. At the time of writing this article, Headboy Creary was busy assigning portfolio responsibilities and putting together his ‘cabinet’ including a raft of  prefects for approval by the school authority. He will also be meeting the teaching staff to share the vision of his stewardship.

An interview with the new Headboy revealed that Luciean was born on November 5th, 1988. He attended the Rollington Town Primary School and entered KC in September of 2000.  His extra curricular activities include swimming--he represented KC at Inter secondary Swimming Championships in 2003 and 2004. He is a former president of the Peer Counseling Association and served as a student councilor in both lower and upper sixth. He is also a member of the Interschool Christian Fellowship.

Luciean has 10 passes at the CXC ‘O’level:  mathematics, literature, English, religious knowledge, Spanish, history, IT, chemistry, biology and physics. He is presently in 13 Arts at the Melbourne campus and plans to sit the GCE “A” level exam in history, Spanish, English Literature and Caribbean studies. His career ambition is to pursue law and politics.

Luciean’s hobby is writing and he is very interested in writing for the KCOBA e-newsletter and has been invited to the editorial board by Basil Waite. A Baptist by religion, he is the last of a family of three brothers and one sister; his elder brother is well known comedian and KCOB, Everaldo Creary. His mother is a strong influence and often reminds him that “Ambition is the key to success.”

Asked his mission statement, Luciean gave the following: to mobilise the entire six form body to get involved in mentoring, counseling, teaching and supervision and to ensure that discipline is maintained and mutual respect is shown by all as part of the process of enhancing academic excellence and building a world class Kingston College.
