Kidney Specialist Honored for Outstanding Work

1
Dr. the Hon Lawson Douglas, OJ, CD,

One of KC’s most outstanding goal keepers of the 1940’s, Dr. the Hon Lawson Douglas, OJ, CD, is the recipient of the Jamaica Medical Foundation’s Special Recognition for his outstanding work in the treatment and prevention of renal failure. He was presented with the award at the Foundation’s Gala Fund Raising Banquet on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at Hilton Kingston Hotel.

Dr. Douglas has dedicated his entire life to saving kidney patients. In 1999, he completed a 400-mile walk around the island to raise funds to assist persons afflicted with kidney disease. More than 900 Jamaicans are diagnosed with the end stage of renal (kidney) failure each year, the majority of whom die because of their inability to access proper care. Apart from being an expensive disease, the number of dialysis machines available on the island is inadequate.

Dr. Douglas has won numerous awards for his efforts including the Musgrave Gold Medal and the Gleaner’s Honour Award of Excellence.
