60th Anniversary of Chapel Choir and St. Augustine’s Chapel Celebrated

Beverley Manley

Choir Directors thru the years Donald C. Morris, Rev. Dr Barry Davies Wayne Moore, Gordon Appleton

A special Mass Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of St. Augustine's chapel and the Kingston College Chapel Choir was held at St. Augustine’s chapel on Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 4:00 p.m.

The three former choirmasters were invited from overseas to conduct the choir on this special occasion: Rev. Dr. Barry Davies served from 1956-69; Mr. Gordon Appleton from 1973-76 while Mr. Donald Morris served from 1976-83.

Rehearsals were held on the three days preceding the service and on the day itself.  The occasion was well prepared for musically. However, the organ was found to be in very bad shape and efforts were made to have repairs and tuning completed in time for the service. Additional repairs are still needed and must be done by a recognized pipe-organ expert.

The Officiating Clergy included, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Thompson, Bishop of Kingston and Member of the Board of Governors, Kingston College; and Rev. Fr. Abner Powell, Chaplain of Kingston College.

Readings were made by Mr. Rupert Hemmings, principal, and Javed Thomas a chorister, while Ms. Helen Douglas, Acting Vice-Principal, led in prayer. The majority of organ playing was by Rev. Dr. Barry Davies.

The Bishop preached a fine sermon showing that he is aware of the most recent developments in the realm of theology and how it affects the work of the church at large.

The service ended with a presentation to the four choirmasters who shared in the conducting of the musical items
