Anthony Davis: Sports Administrator Par Excellence

Anthony St. C Davis is a KC old boy who has made significant contributions to the development of track athletics in Jamaica. With Dennis Johnson, he is at the heart of the revolutionary development of sports at UTECH that has facilitated the emergence of such greats as ASAFA Powell, Usain Bolt and Sherone Simpson, to name a few, who are presently training at the College as students or beneficiaries of Teddy McCook's inspired IAAF's School of excellence programme.

Summary of Accomplishments

Seven years of administrative experience in the Department of Sport. Current responsibilities include service as Director of Sport. The Department serves approximately 2,000 students and staff members in addition to approximately 3,000 members of the community. He has served on several committees such as Graduation, Fun-day/seminar, new student orientation, Student recruitment, Sport facilities management, Finance and Operation Review Committee. He specializes in Event planning, Sports facilities operations and maintenance management, sports marketing, customer service, as well as being recognized internationally for track and field competition management and officiating.

He is proficient at planning and delivering systems for event management, planning and managing major national and international competitions, writing proposals and securing significant sponsorships, recruiting student athletes, producing and managing sports marketing and public relation campaigns, nurturing community relationships, creating national and international linkages. Designing and implementing support systems for student athletes.

Notable Local University service

  • Initiated, coordinated and implemented project to secure perimeter advertising signs for sports facilities.
  • Initiated, collaborated and secured sponsorship for uniforms, nutritional supplements, and promotional gift items.
  • Initiated, negotiated and secured rental contract of sport facilities for major events such as Caribbean inter-bank competition, Social Development Regional sports day.
  • Initiated and secured contract agreements document for student athletes on scholarship.
  • Initiated discussion for the design and upgrade of existing office.
  • Wrote, submit and discussed proposals to potential sponsors aimed at securing major funding to upgrade sport facilities and provide funding for sports scholarships.
  • Designed, planned, implemented and managed a series of track and field competitions designed exclusive of senior/tertiary athletes.
  • Collaborated with university graphic artist on the design of the department sign located at the entrance to office and procured same.
  • Collaborated with university graphic artist on the design of the department letterhead and complimentary slip.
  • Initiated and developed the Department Tagline “Home of World Class Athletes, Vision and Mission Statements.

Professional affiliation and community service

  • Served as Competition secretary and General Secretary of the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association.
  • Served as executive of the organizing committee for the Jamaica National/ Intercollegiate Relays.
  • Managed all major national track and field competitions (1990 – 2003 )
  • Competition Director and Chairman of the IAAF/ Coca Cola World Junior Championships in Athletics (1,800 participants from 167 countries 2002).
  • Managed national teams to World University Games and Regional competitions.
  • Initiated collaboration with the Survey Department for assistance in providing land surveyors and the use of Electromagnetic Distance Measuring (EDM) equipment in local track and field competitions so as to eliminate the use of traditional methods to measure distances.
  • Initiated collaboration with an overseas consultant to introduce the use of Photo finish equipment in track and field competitions and also linking the  timing of events and results data to get the Fully Automatic Timing
  • Volunteer track and field coordinator at the YMCA.                                                                
  • Member International Association of Sports Facilities Managers.

Initiatives taken to improve track and field in Jamaica

  • Introduced the use of EDM equipment.
  • Contracted the service of Omega timers (Irvin Black) to introduce the use of Photo finish equipment.
  • Contracted the service of Bob Podkamina, (person who wrote the first timing software in the USA) and linked both timing and data to get the FAT for the first time.
  • Conceived the idea of a series of meeting for collegiate athletes. Plan and implement the series of meeting known as the intercollegiate classics.  Series comprised 6 track and field meetings and two cross country runs. From January – April. Secure all sponsorship (1996-1999)
  • Secured sponsorship to acquire 300 umbrellas for officials. Designed and acquired through sponsorship shirts for officials, as the first phase of establishing national uniform.
  • Secured sponsorship of computers from IBM for two years for use at the national championship.
  • Introduced the use of computer terminal liked to the results system to be accessed by the media.
  • Initiated promotions to involve spectators, (give ways) and have roving announcer on the infield to provide commentary on field events. (made event spectator friendly)

Vision for the Department of Sport

Build a  sport program that offers all the relevant support systems for academic and athletic success of our student athletes. ie: dental, optical care training in grooming, voice and speech techniques, provision of academic tutors.

Upgrade sport facilities to international standards. Train all sport facilities staff to required levels to support upgraded facilities.

Develop income generation projects  and market the university so as to generate enough income to support the program without internal budgetary support.

To have our student athletes earning selection on every senior national team in the traditional sports.
