Would a Graduation/School Leavers Ball be a good idea for students from the graduating class and the upper sixth form at Kingston College? Well, a survey was done and has indeed proven that a Ball of this nature has been long overdue.
A committee has been formed and has sought and got approval from the school’s principal Mr. Hemmings. The committee has had two meetings and is in the process of sorting out exactly what is to be done and the roles of all members on the committee.
The members on the committee are members of staff, Twan Beckford and Miss Tamica Telphia, sixth formers Lionel Tomlinson, Seon Ball, Damion Anglin, Hanif Howe, Ockino Petrie and Lorenzo Lynch. From time to time the committee will seek the knowledge and expertise on this area from other members of staff.
The committee has met with Mr. Hemmings once and has decided to meet and update him on the progress of this venture at least once per month.
Following due protocols, members of the administration as well as other members of staff will be invited. The administration will be invited free of cost, the fifth and sixth form coordinators will be invited at half price while other members of staff who wishes to attend will be charged at the same price as the students.
The Jamaica Pegasus hotel and the Knutsford Court hotel are the main selections to work with.
We have not yet decided on a pricing package that the students will have to pay, this is due the fact that we have not finalized any location and budget as yet but we are trying as hard as possible to keep the ceiling very low where most students can afford to pay.
We have also decided on awarding students and their dates for the best outfit for the evening, the best couple, a gate prize among other things. We are also looking at inviting (free of cost) and awarding individual students that have performed well in the recent CXC and CAPE exams. We are also looking to take on a guest of honour each year that the students will be honouring. This year will be fitting to honour our immediate past Vice Principal, Miss Helen Douglas.
With all this said, all of us (past students) including myself, had hoped as students of Kingston College that we would have had a Ball in our time. Well, we have to start somewhere and I have decided along with other teachers and students that this year we are going to give them that long awaited ball as a send off.
I am therefore on behalf of the committee, asking as many if not all Old Boys to help us by donating whatever you can so that we can invite as many members of staff as possible for free and have enough to fund gifts and other prizes that we hope to give away. We are asking you to help us fund this event so that it can be as successful as possible. We will be setting up an account soon so that whomever wants to give can do so through that account. There will be other ways to send your donations. We will be advising you as soon as the Bursar’s department of the school advises us on how we can go about doing that.
