Allan Alberga President, Atlanta Jamaican Association"
" Friends, Jamaicans and Caribbeanites,
As you know, this Christmas season is meant to be the celebration of birthday 2007. As is our custom, the Caribbean community will immerse ourselves in reggae and soca, which, by this time, should be familiar strains in Atlanta, heaven and ...
The presence of Jamaicans in Atlanta has exploded from the few in the Seventies to today's estimate of 40,000 plus. As we raise our voices in praise, worship and carols this season, spare a thought every now and then to the ineffectiveness of our collective presence in the city. We have no political or economic weight at the end of 2007; but there is no reason - other than ourselves - why this should not change in 2008.
As the newest and fastest growing Jamaican community in North America, the Atlanta Jamaicans can design a pattern of growth unprecedented in the history of Jamaican migration to this continent. We are bright, talented and U.S smart. What we need is mobilization of these qualities to make the potential a reality. Until then, we are providing just band-aid to our homeland.
As the mantle of leadership of the Atlanta Jamaican Association passes to others, I plan to explore how this mobilization can be realized.
Peace and Love during the season and beyond,
Allan Alberga
President, Atlanta Jamaican Association"
