Two KCOBs Receive National Youth Awards

By Jeffery Foreman

Prime Minister Portia Simpson - Miller embraces KCOB Kevin Ellis

Emancipation Park came alive on December 3, 2006 at the Prime Minister’s National Youth Award for Excellence and the Jamaican Youth in concert under the theme “Aspire today, inspire tomorrow.

The event marked the end of youth month in Jamaica and the acknowledgement of some of our extraordinary young people who have excelled in various fields ranging from journalism, arts and culture, leadership, academia, agriculture, sports and entrepreneurship to community service.

Two KCOB’s received awards that night. They were Kevin Ellis for excellence in journalism and Sheldon Shepard for excellence in the arts and culture.

Kevin is a second year medical science student at the University of the West Indies, Mona pursuing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. Kevin is an activist in youth empowerment at the community level which he has taken nationally through his columns in the Teen Herald youth magazine. Although coming from humble beginnings, Kevin has stood strong and acts as a role model to many Jamaican youth from similar origins.

Sheldon Shepard is an accomplished poet, playwright, actor and screenwriter. Few were therefore surprised that he walked away with silverware. Sheldon’s dominance in the arts started from age fourteen, during his sojourn at KC where he consistently won awards for dub poetry, speech and acting at the annual JCDC competition.

Congrats to our Fortis Brothers
