A quick glance at the results of the recently concluded general elections revealed that six KC Old Boys were candidates – four for the JLP and two for the PNP.
The JLP candidates were Delroy Chuck, Clive Mullings, Russell Hammond and Charlton Collie.
For the PNP, Anthony Hylton and Delano Franklyn were the two Fortis candidates. Chuck and Mulling won their seats for the JLP while Collie and Hammond lost; on the PNP side Hylton won while Franklyn lost.
Hylton, having switched from St Thomas, won the safe PNP seat of St. Andrew West quite comfortably but Franklyn running for the first time found the going rough in St. Mary West and lost. Of course, we will recall that Hylton was the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in the last government with Franklyn as his deputy.
Dr Charlton Collie lost for the second time in Central Kingston (a safe PNP seat?) and Russell Hammond was no match for PNP bigwig Roger Clarke who left his home parish of St Elizabeth to win in the neighbouring parish of Westmoreland.
It is expected that Mullings and Chuck, both attorneys at law, will be in the new Cabinet to be sworn in soon. Rhodes Scholar Chuck should bring all his legal acumen to his new position and the same is expected of Mullings who as a classmate of mine years ago was a good debater and orator. (Somehow we all felt then that he would study law and then become a politician!). I am sure that all KC Old Boys will be watching their performances in Parliament very keenly.
