April 12, 2008 was the occasion of the University of the West Indies Mona Campus annual Student Awards Ceremony. Eleven members of the already impressive cohort of KCOB students at the university put down purple and white for the red blazers of Mona.
Among the top honorees that night were Peter John Plummer and Darryl Strachan. Peter John, member of the Schools’ Challenge Quiz team of 2006, received the UWI Open Scholarship.
This award, worth the entire cost of tuition and maintenance, is “Based on high performance in the University Scholarship Examination…[and is]… the highest award offered by the University.”
Darryl received two awards. The first for excellence in table tennis and the second was the Premier award for sports. A Premier award is presented for:
1) Excellence in sport, culture or service while representing the university
2) Being a role model in “discipline, team building and human relations”
3) Demonstration of qualities that include “service to fellow students”, “willingness to serve voluntarily” and “ability to motivate others.”
This is the second occasion on which Darryl has captured the Premier award having received it in 2006.
