The greatest and most renowned all boys school in the English speaking Caribbean. The last bastion on male leadership in Academics, Sports and Culture. The KC Spirit is esoteric and cannot be comprehended vicariously. Fortis Forever...Forever Fortis.
The preceding lines describe the Kingston College group on the popular social networking site Facebook.
Social networking online has been one of the key characteristics of the modern internet era. Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Hi5 provide a medium through which millions of internet users can create profiles about themselves, meet friends, share pictures and videos and create groups of common interest.
Of the 60 million Facebook users, the Kingston College group is one member short of reaching the 300 member mark. The group was formed a little over a year ago by R. Reid, has six officers and three administrators. Membership is modest compared to more established groups on the Facebook database but as more people sign up for the network and discover the group, numbers have increased.
Communication is the strength of the group. Any information relating to say Manning Cup schedules and results, the passing away of an Old Boy or one being elevated to a new post and KCOBA events – can easily be passed along to the general membership. The advantage of this feature is clear. The KC body at large (current students, Old Boys and admirers) can be informed of developments within the school.
There are however other features of the group which are underutilized. As an example, Facebook allows members to create discussion fora. To date only two discussions have been initiated. Additionally, despite the ability to upload videos on the site, none is available for viewing.
Social networking sites are at the core dependent upon users to generate content and keep interest going. The Kingston College group would benefit from greater numbers. If you are already a Facebook user and not a member of the group, simply search for the group name. Not on the world’s second largest networking site? Go the www.facebook.com and sign up. The group awaits your input.
