After 21 years at Kingston College, 48 year old Everton Augustus Burrell has been recommended by the Board Of Governors to act as Principal of Kingston College. This followed Rupert Hemmings’ departure on leave and who demitted the office effective with the commencement of the 2008/09 academic year.
In the Michaelmas term of 1987, young Everton Burrell joined the staff of Kingston College’s Melbourne Campus as a PE and History teacher, armed with a teaching certificate and a diploma and out of Churches Teacher’s College and the GC Foster College of Physical Education. He threw himself at the task with efficiency and dedication that by the end of the first year he was being touted to be a coordinator by Ivan “Wally” Johnson. The ensuing years were to witness his meteoric rise through the ranks that was facilitated because he was always prepared to listen, work beyond the call of duty and the discipline he instilled and notwithstanding the caning, many youths welcomed him as a popular choice to the top post.
The Manchester High graduate (1972-77) was born in Porus; and yes of course, attended Porus Primary an institution that has produced some of Jamaica’s most distinguished educators and scientists. It is this humble background and quiet disposition that served to enhance his mobility and endearment to the “Kollege.” Three years ago he was appointed vice principal and thereafter with a passion for excellence pursued and attained a BA degree in school management and leadership from Mico University College.
Married with 4 children, Burrell lists cricket as his passion.
Under his watch, he hopes to strengthen the mentorship programme at the school, work assiduously to upgrade the plant and improve the sixth form facilities with a view to increasing the intake.
