I

t was a hot summer in Atlanta this year. Despite the heat many Jamaicans in the ATL braved the heat to enjoy the Jamaican Independence Fun Day in Exchange Park on August 9th. This was one of several events coordinated by the Union of Jamaican Organizations in Atlanta (UJOIA) , under the auspices of our Honorary Consul to Atlanta, Vin Martin.

It was a lot of fun, especially for the kids who enjoyed "Poppy Show Olympics" featuring lime and spoon races, sack races, donut eating contests and other games which were organized by the St. Hughs Alumnae..

A few KC Old Boys were on hand as well. The sounds of DJ Migraine could be heard throughout the park and Captain Mike and yours truly pitched in for the donut eating contests. I also ran into Kevin Boothe and Ned Ritchie-Horton in the park.

I run into KC Old Boys everywhere. A few weeks ago, I saw KC school board member, Pat McIntosh of Chapel repair fame in the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston.

Let me tell you it was HOT in Kingston too. I am told it was the hottest in some 20 years. Even a trip into the Blue Mountain area did not help. I did not see but I did speak with sixth form classmates Joseph Gangadeen and Herbert Edwards. I went to Dim Sum with Howard Lau who was a year ahead of me at KC and also a close friend of my dear departed classmate Glen Chong. And I spoke with KC Times photographer Ronnie Chin a couple of times on the phone.

I hope you had a good summer. It's back to school for the kids and some of us adults.

Happy reading,

Glen Laman
