The 2009 K. Churchill Neita Inter-Form quiz Competition
By Twan Beckford
Another year of intense but friendly competition has marked the end of the eighth season of the K. Churchill Neita Inter-form Quiz competition on the Melbourne Park Campus. What can be said to be our most challenging year financially, proved to be our most competitive season. Coming off an extensive celebration from K.C’s 9th victory in the TVJ’s School’s Challenge Quiz Competition, the Grade 7, 8 and 9 students showed the rest of their schoolmates that K.C. will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the Schools’ Challenge Quiz Competition for years to come.
The finals of the K. Churchill Neita Junior Inter-form Quiz Competition were held on May 15, 2009 in the newly opened Multipurpose Building on the Melbourne Park Campus. The day’s events began at approximately 3:30pm and ran smoothly through to 5:45pm. The first match of the day was the Master's match which was introduced 5 years ago and is played between male and female teachers. The match ended in favour of the Male team with a score of 42-35 and seeing them taking a 3-2 lead in the overall series.
All teams, Grades 7, 8 and 9, lived up to the competitiveness that was displayed at the beginning of the competition on April 27. Team members from 7 Gibson; Mark Lewis, Jayzon Brooks, Javair Thomas, Juvaughn Jackson and their reserve Romar Beckford proved that they were indeed better than their opponent 7 Holding, when they defeated them 23-9.
The third match of the day was a little closer than that of the Grade 7. Maurice Fisher, Jordan Forbes, John-Luke Foster, Patrick Jones all of 8 Hardie teamed up to defeat their rival 8 Hardie with a score of 25-13.
The most anticipated matchup of the day was between 9 DeCarteret and 9 Forrest and it must be said that it did not disappoint. The Grade 9 match was keenly contested and proved to be one of the best matches that has ever been played over the eight years of the staging of the Quiz. Both teams changed the lead throughout the rounds but only one team could take the main prize in the end. At the end of the match, only two points separated the winner from the loser. That was the most intense moment as it took an additional five minutes to announce the score after properly checking to see if the answers corresponded with the points given by the judges. Ramone Garvey, Kristoff Adjmul, Kiejarnie Porter, Jabez Roberts and the reserve Akeem Smith of 9 DeCarteret came away with the win, beating 9 Forrest 29 to 27.
Special thanks were extended to former school Nurse, Tasella Collie who donated all six cakes for the three winning teams and their beaten counterparts. Mrs. Collie was also instrumental in securing financial sponsorship from a few Old Boys at the last minute to cover the budget of the Inter-form Quiz. The baskets which were given to the winning team and to Mrs. Fraser-Harris, for her hard work in helping to organize the competition, were donated by Lasco Distributors. It must also be noted that Lasco has been partnering with the competition for the past five years. The biscuits that were also given to the winners were donated by International Biscuit Company, a subsidiary of Seprod Limited. The Inter-form Quiz ended on a high note with much bigger hopes and anticipation of next year being bigger and better than this year.
It is evident that the K. Churchill Neita Junior Inter-form Quiz competition held on the Melbourne Park campus annually has reaped high rewards and praises. This can be seen where members of the 2007 and 2009 winning School’s Challenge Quiz teams as well as all the members of the team that made it to the Quarter Finals of the said competition in 2008 were all members of one or more teams in the junior Inter-form Quiz competition while they were at Melbourne and can trace their inspiration to join the School’s Challenge Quiz team to that period of their high school life.
The competition must be kept alive and is in need of future sponsorship. Let me use this medium to appeal to all members of the Kingston College Diaspora to help us keep the dream alive. Let us all help to keep the K. Churchill Neita Junior Inter-form Quiz Competition alive as this is the place where talents are discovered and champions are made.
