Hampton, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced sophomore sprinter Leford Green as the 2008-09 CIAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Thursday afternoon. Green will be presented with the award at the Durham Marriott during the CIAA Spring Meeting in Durham, NC on May 19th.
2008 NCAA defending indoor 400m national champion, Leford Green led the way for JCSU Men's Track. Green opened the 2009 indoor season with a win in the 500m and set a new Clemson facility record of 1:03.52 seconds. This season in indoor and outdoor track and field, Green has competed in the 60m, 200m, 400m, 500m, and anchor on the 4x100m and 4x400m.
The St. Catherine, Jamaican native earned his second All-American honors for his indoor performance. Green established a new personal best in the 200m and the fastest collegiate time in the nation of 20.41 seconds. Green has produced automatic qualifying times for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 200m and 400m.
At the CIAA Outdoor Championships, Green was named Championship MVP, after placing first in the 200m, 400H, and second in the 400m.
In addition to performing so well on the track this year, Green is also a 4.0 GPA student majoring in Information Systems Engineering. He was also awarded the Pettis Norman Award at the JCSU Annual Athletic Banquet as the Student-Athlete of the Year.
Green is now preparing for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship that will be held May 21-23 in San Angelo, Texas.
