a few words from the editor

Glen Laman

C

ongratulations to Herbert Nelson who earlier this month assumed responsibilities as KC's principal. I wish him all success in guiding our beloved Kingston College into a brighter future. I understand he went to JC, but I am confident his blood is already changing from red to purple.

I heard a lot of comments about how "de man dem a dead off so," as we kept getting news of the passing of one old boy after another in recent weeks. We hate to see them go but such is the "way of all flesh."

On hearing of Mollo's passing, one of our longtime supporters sent out the words of a poem called, The Dash. It basically says our lives are summed up in the dash between our date of birth and the date of our death --June 10, 1971 -- July 21, 2009, for example-- so it behoves us to ensure that our dash represents something.

We go back to Africa this month with an article by Ras Wayne Rose on the Rastafarian community of Shashamene, Ethiopia. I am sure you will enjoy it as well as the pictures.

Next month, I expect we will have an article about South Korea since Contributing Editor, Derrick R. Wright, will be travelling there to speak at Yonsei University. You can read more details about this upcoming trip elsewhere in this edition.

Finally, be sure to read a beautiful article, The Women of KC, by Everton Bailey. If memory is correct, we first discussed such an article at last year's Purple Session in Florida.

Happy Reading,

Glen Laman
