Ata function held at the Norman Manley Law School on Saturday, October 10, 2009, two inaugural David Hunt Memorial Scholarships were awarded in honour of the late Calabar High School and Jamaica national coach, David "Wagga" Hunt. The scholarship winners are Jehvaun Faulder of Calabar and Miguel Morrison of Kingston College.

Both students were selected following a nomination procedure and consideration by their respective schools and by the David Hunt Memorial Scholarship Sub-Committee. Each scholarship is valued at J$100,000 per annum. "The intention is that Jehvaun Faulder and Miguel Morrison -- now in Grade 8 -- will hold these scholarships from now until they complete school at the Sixth Form level," noted Arnold "Dullo" McDonald, the Chairman of the David Hunt Memorial Committee.

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of criteria that include: (a) academic performance, (b) participation in sports, (c) extra-curricular involvement, and (d) financial need.

At the Presentation Ceremony, Christopher Hunt, brother of the late David Hunt, noted that the Hunt family had a purple heart. David, he said, was a "loving, caring, meticulous individual who lived his life to help others. In life, it's not necessarily what you receive, but what you give back that counts."

The keynote address at the Presentation Ceremony was delivered by Hugh Reid, Chief Operating Officer of the Victoria Mutual Building Society. Mr. Reid, who was himself a contemporary of David Hunt at Kingston College, indicated that Victoria Mutual saw ventures such as the David Hunt Scholarship Award as part of national development, and encouraged the awardees to make the most of the opportunity.
