Maurice Wilson -- a truly fabulous man

By Ian Wilkinson

Maurice Wilson

I

admired Maurice dearly. When I was at KC (in the late 70s to early 80s) he was a great influence and help, especially with Spanish - probably my favourite subject in school!. I don't know who gave him the name but some Spanish students used to call him "el lobo" (the wolf).

During a very successful period ("purple patch"!), especially 1992-1996 when we won three titles, he assisted KC's Schools' Challenge Quiz team unhesitatingly, responding quickly to my requests for Spanish questions, idioms etc.

I used to hear and see him sing at KC and would often try to imitate him while walking on the street or even in the shower! Upon receiving a gift of a violin in January 2000 I recalled his musical prowess and immediately sought him out. He gave me many lessons at his home where I religiously presented myself on Saturday afternoons. My appreciation of music improved tremendously "learning at the feet of Gamaliel." As a result of his great intervention, my neighbours no longer complained that my playing sounded "like two cats fighting" as I lovingly embraced Beethoven et al!

He was to play a seminal role in my life - giving me the courage (nay fortitude!!!) to propose to my wife by attending an important dinner and serenading us with his (previously arranged!) solo violin artistry to the delight of onlookers. I will never forget his performance especially that beautiful piece "Liebesleid" - love song --by Kreisler that had the future Mrs. Wilkinson spellbound - enough for her to later shriek a vivacious "yes" to a man on his knees.

I always sought him out at events, for example, going to see him play in Spanish Town and at Wintyrotti's "Wings of Song."

He was a true Fortis, dedicating his professional life to our noble and beloved institution and contributing immeasurably to its immortal legacy.

Travel well Maurice - may you rest in peace and continue to play and sing for the angels!

Fortis Forever,
