The statue of Jamaican sprinter, Merlene Ottey , was unveiled by Prime Minister PJ Patterson at the National Stadium's Statue Park on Wednesday, December 28 2005 .
The J$2 milliion, eight foot almost 700 pound statue, sculpted by Musgrave gold medalist Basil Watson , depicts Ottey with her right hand outstretched as if reaching for the skies.
The statue was erected to honor Merlene Joyce Ottey for 20 years of distinguished achievement on the track, winning a record 14 World Outdoor Championships and eight Olympic medals.
