KC Cult-URE

Reginald Reid

Let me readily confess that before the start of Champs 2009, I did not expect us to be a contender.

While I would never admit this to anyone outside of the fraternity, media reports and the pundits had me convinced that Calabar was about to 3-peat.

Therefore, it was very satisfying to the win the Quiz because at least we would have had something to counter the Calabar euphoria after Champs, even though in a very real sense, Quiz and Champs are more like apples and oranges but KC people have always had an uncanny ability to justify anything and everything.

Human excrement the least of our problems

Reprinted from Jamaica Observer

BY WARREN BLAKE

Sunday, April 12, 2009

In the 1980s the USA had a major waste disposal problem. This was evidenced by the difficulties the USA had in trying to export its hazardous waste.

It was negatively in the news for trying to pay Third World countries to take its waste.

A few words from the editor

It was a wonderful week for KC.

Mine was not too bad either. I was in Kingston a part of that week and attended the Teacher's Appreciation Luncheon just days after KC's victory in the TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz Competition.

The Quiz team attended the luncheon and were given presents along with the teachers. After lunch, Audley Hewett and I hitched a ride to Champs with Clive Golding, who represented the Toronto chapter at the luncheon.

I had no idea Champs tickets were so hard to get. But with a little help from Audley I was soon sitting in the stands. At times it appeared there were more old boys than students in attendance.

Rachel Manley Launches Latest Book in Barbados

z
Rachel and Laza

The day before leaving Barbados for Champs I went to a bookshop in Bridgetown to attend the launch of Rachel Manley’s new book ‘Horses in her hair.’

When I arrived there were about sixty persons in attendance listening to eloquent speeches by friends of the author who herself gave a humor-filled response in which she highlighted the years when she lived and worked in Barbados.

The Kingstonian and the Papaw tree

Iam a Kingstonian and KC Old Boy, born and grown under the clock.

As a child, I would visit the market frequently with my mother and looked forward to the purchase of one of my favorite fruits, the papaw (Papaya for you foreigners).

Yet, while I had seen the tree loaded with fruits, I was not familiar with the methods of picking the fruit and thought it no different from any other fruit tree.

Years later, on one of my work assignment measuring river flows in St. Thomas, I became the mascot of the little district of LLandwewy.  On this particular day, while walking through Miss G's yard on my way to the Yallahs River, I observed a lovely papaw tree that was well laden with the fruits.  My greetings to Miss G that morning and my expression of love for papaws was most emphatic and of course the response I was soliciting came; "Gwaan go pick papaw mi son”.
