The high cost of a university education

Twan Beckford

Students enroll in Kingston College and after a minimum of five years they are ready to move into a university programme.

Either it is at the prominent University of the West Indies or the University of Technology in Jamaica. Students are elated to get the news that they have been accepted in one of the many university programmes that they had previously applied for.

It is all jubilation for the parents and the students until they come to the shocking revelation that come September 2009, tuition fees at the University of the West Indies will be approximately $210,000 per year for programmes outside of the faculty of Medical Sciences where it will be a minimum of $500,000 per year.

A Pop icon passes

KC won 39-28

The untimely passing of Michael Jackson has left those of us who grew up in the 1960’s and 1970’s teary eyed and sad.

As children and teenagers we knew all the songs ‘by heart’ as we sang (or spoke the words) with our girlfriends who loved the Jacksons to death. The bold amongst us had our glove and as rudeboys we already had our ‘gunmouth’ pants so we were in style influenced by Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five!!!

A few words from the editor

They are running the Peachtree Road race in Atlanta as I write this morning. For many years I ran in what is reported to be the largest road race in the world boasting over 55,000 runners.

The race is run over a 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) course through the city's streets each July 4th.

The competitors include many international runners who are attracted by the first prize of $15,000. The race has been dominated by Kenyans in recent years but last year Terefe Maregu of Ethiopia took the men's prize.

Neita bemoans breakdown in discipline

z
K. Churchill Neita

Reprinted from the Jamaica Observer

H

IGH-PROFILE criminal lawyer K Churchill Neita is bemoaning the breakdown in discipline and values among high schools and is urging speedy action to correct what he called a worrying trend.

Delivering the main address at Kingston College's Founders' Day dinner in Kingston recently, Neita, an old boy of the institution, said that the breakdown in discipline was going against the teachings of stalwarts of the 84-year-old institution, in particular the school's founder Percival W Gibson, who went on to become Anglican Bishop of Jamaica.
