Letter to the Editor

vc

Ijust got around to reading the February Issue of the newsletter from Atlanta.

I thought the article from Dr.Cedric Lazarus was particularly funny. It made me reflect back to my days between '73-'78, and I too can remember some fun we had calling funny names like, Bugoo, Lunatic, Fuji(RIP),Crush up &Tennament. I refuse to link these nicknames to actual names, like Dr. Lazarus I don't want any wives, siblings or children to run with or try to ridicule anyone.

Things like that are what made myself and countless others happy to wake up in the mornings just to get to school and made us so sad when we knew it was time for us to leave school.

By the way a couple of those names made it past the gates of KC. ( LOL)

Sabina park: Location, Location!

Model of Sabina

No matter how this 2009 Digicel Test Series turns out, the West Indies drove a dagger through England’s heart in the first Test at Sabina Park.

Of course, this is not the first time that a cricket team has been shell-shocked. But this one in Kingston might have been the most riveting and it should have ramifications for years to come. For the future of West Indies cricket, let’s hope that a few ten-year-olds were on-hand to witness the mayhem. At least one will undoubtedly be `Taylor-wannabe.’

Some years ago, the Australian fast bowler Geoff Lawson recalled the day he took a train down from his home in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales to see his first Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. So enthralled was he at the sight of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson terrorizing the Englishmen, that he wanted to be fast bowler right then and there. And a decent one he turned out to be.

KC's cadet unit Stands up to inspection

Reprinted from the Jamaica Observer

KINGSTON College (KC) has long been known for its prowess at sports and in academics, so it comes as little surprise that its Cadet Unit should have the biggest battalion in the entire Caribbean and is one of the most accomplished.

In addition to the many top awards the unit has received since its inception in 1940 as a sub-unit of the then functioning Army Training Corp in Jamaica, it also helps to mold the boys into disciplined, dedicated and committed students.

Trust fund sets $50 Million target

Trust Fund Report Cover

The Kingston College Development Trust Fund has set a new target of J$50 Million for its Capital Fund by 2010. The current balance is approximately J$34 Million.

The fund is calling upon all KC old boys, friends and supporters of the college for help in achieving this important milestone.

The KCDTF was established in 1987 to "further the development of Kingston College in its goal to foster academic excellence, development of character and good citizenship" by "prudently managing a perpetual Capital Fund... the income from which shall be used for the benefit of Kingston College."

In addition to individual donations, special fundraising events can held to benefit the fund. Atlanta KCOB Whylie Chambers once held a birthday party and in lieu of presents his guests were asked to make a donation to the Trust Fund. You can read more about Whylie's efforts by clicking here.

A few words from the editor

In a perfect world teachers would be among the very highest compensated workers. We do not live in a perfect world.

While we cannot pay teachers what they are worth, we can however, show our appreciation.

The various chapters of the KCOBA in association with the KCPTA will hold an appreciation luncheon for KC's teachers next month. It will be time well spent.

And so we salute the KC teachers--the architects of our sudents' success.

Happy Reading ,

Journey to washington, D.C.

W e, that is my spouse Calys, son Malcolm X. and I, set out at around 5:30 AM the Saturday before the Presidential Inauguration Day (20th January 2009). Of course traveling at such early morn was not a new phenomenon for us, having done so countless times when we lived in New York and journeyed to Canada for the annual “Groundings with Our Brothers” from the Toronto Chapter or the Family Gatherings for Thanksgiving in Pittsburgh. To be sure, I am the morning person in the family, so naturally the driving fell to me.

The trip north was uneventful in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina until we got to Virginia where we received the shock that the sales tax rivaled Jamaica’s at the unconscionable rate of 11% (Georgia is around 6% in most counties), after we stopped at a local Subway restaurant. Resuming the trip on I-95 was a breeze until we neared the City of Richmond, VA, when it became obvious that a massive vehicular pilgrimage to the US political Mecca was in progress; make that snail’s pace progress. License plates revealed that no state was going to be left behind in terms of representation by its residents – California, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, just to name a few. There was even a New Jersey car in the mix, perhaps re-defining the meaning of reverse commuting.
