Sport Focused School to Open in Toronto

Cedric Lazarus
Dr. Cedric Lazarus

T

hose of us who went to KC in the 70s and before will recall that some of our detractors used to say that we were a sports school. No doubt they were envious of our success on the sports field while at the same time extremely ignorant of our academic achievements.

As Wally Johnson once said, “All KC teams feel that they have a God given right to win every competition!” In those days, KC teams won so many inter-school sports competitions that outsiders were sure to wonder if we did any academic work at all. read more »

Letter to the Editor

Everton Bailey
Everton Bailey

This letter is in response to a letter from a disgruntled KC Old Boy, Anthony Tyson, which appeared in the March issue of the KCOBA Newsletter. For those who were fortunate not to have read the letter, below is a brief summary.

The letter is filled with a litany of grievances against KC in general, which is perceived to be on a “decadent and gloomy path;” the school’s infrastructure is described as “run down;” the teachers are allegedly unwilling to mark homework and “not accountable;” the KC Board is deemed “as being very weak and incapable of running the school properly”; and, most disturbing, the student body is depicted as “looking like men taken out of the field after a hard days work cutting cane, and dons a tie, which he uses to prop up his low self esteem.” read more »

Everton Barrett
Everton Barrett

Sometime last year a Jamaican businessman and management guru wrote an article in the Gleaner in which he tried to ascertain the reasons why so many Jamaicans succeed abroad and were dismal failures in their homeland.

I responded to his article telling him about the need to promote opportunities that didn’t exist in our homeland and for our leaders who are truly committed to building an Island nation to set the tone and create the environment that would bring out the best in our youngsters.

Well you can pretty much guess what his reaction was. He embarked upon a caustic soliloquy about the Jamaican experience being so unique and Jamaicans having no respect for the law while in Jamaica but once they have left its shores they realize that bending the laws of a foreign country came with painful punitive consequences and so they are forced to straighten up and fly right. Update on Fortis in Iraq

Lt. Reynolds
Lt. Lawrence Reynolds

L ast month we published the story about KC old boy Lt. Lawrence Reynolds who was about to be deployed to Iraq as a medical officer.

Lawrence's wife Kara has been keeping us apprised of his status via emails and we are happy to report that he arrived safely in Iraq after a delay due to a report of chicken pox. This resulted in them waiting in Kuwait until everyone was medically cleared.

We have Lt. Reynolds mailing address in Iraq, so if anyone is interested in sending him a care package or just writing a him a letter please contact the editor.
