Fortisans make their mark at JCSU

Gerald Hector

By Gerald Hector

When a College Man does something big, it is only appropriate that it is shared worldwide.  Two years ago when Lennox Graham took over the reins of Johnson C. Smith University's track and field program, I am sure that many people thought he was crazy for leaving when Kingston College at the height of its successes at Boys Champs.

However, Lennox had a vision, and he is marching toward the vision at break neck speed.  One of the parameters that surrounded his hire was his ability to recruit and maintain a "student athlete" program.  He should be able to produce quality performances on the track, but his athletes should perform in the classroon as well.  Dr. Dorothy Yancy wanted him to bring a first class program to the University.

We did not Know

vc
Michael Walters

SSome 40 years ago, while preparing for A’Levels, we had the same zoology class with Mr. McKie, but we did not know.  Some 40 years ago, while preparing for A’Levels, we had the same economics class with Mr. Bailey, but we did not know.

We only found out last week, when I visited Miami to meet a lady who I understand was a relative of mine from the Spring Village Bushy Park area.

NY Chapter's 26th Annual Reunion Dinner

2009 Honorees pose with Ambassador Johnson, Bishop Taylor, Rev. McIntyre and Robert Kelly

Saturday May 2, saw the hosting of the 26th annual reunion awards dinner at Antun’s located in the New York City borough of Queens.

Despite the harsh economic times the event was well supported, over 250 guests were in attendance. The attendees had a great evening, master of ceremonies, Rev. Canon Calvin McIntyre in his role as comedian had the guests laughing all night, and the DJ was also in fine fettle, this was evidenced by the fact that the dance floor was still buzzing when the festivities had to come to an end at 2 A.M.

This year’s event was highlighted by the honoring of four outstanding gentlemen who have served Kingston College over the years, Keith Daley, Winston Harvey, Errol Lecky and Maurice Lewis. Patrons for the dinner were the Hon. Anthony Johnson, Jamaica’s Ambassador to the USA and The Right Rev. E. Don Taylor, Bishop of New York City, both KC Old Boys.

The sports Illustrated Champs article

S

ports Illustrated covered the 2009 ISSA Championships with a lovely article in which KC featured prominently.

Sports Illustrated photo of Champs crowd

Jamaica is a country of vivid colors. The azure waters surrounding the island are as bright as a new pair of jeans. The ripe saffron-hued mangos and blood-red Otaheite Apples glisten like gems from their branches. And the concrete homes
painted yellow, pink and lime green sparkle under the glow of the Caribbean light in midday.

But nowhere on the island is this ...

A few words from the editor

Glen Laman

The Atlanta chapter chose to do a play instead of a banquet this year amidst concerns arising from the global economic crisis.

And so Jamaica 2 Rahtid Pupalick, the award winning satirical revue was brought up from Jamaica for two shows on May 10th, Mother's Day at the Shiloh High School Performing Arts Center in Snellville.

The good news is we made some money.

Our concession stand did a brisk business between shows and during the intermissions. Supreme Carib Radio - Love 860 AM provided a five night accomodation package at Travellers Beach Resort in Negril which was raffled along with a gift basket from Ocho Rios and a beautiful floral arrnagement from Merthella Wright.

Atlanta enjoys Jamaica 2 Rahtid

xvx
A scene from Pupalick

Excerpted from the Caribbean Star

On Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10th, the Performing Arts Center of the Shiloh High School exploded with a rollicking display of lively music and uproarious comedy with two shows of the play Jamaica 2 Rahtid - Pupalick. Knee-slappingly humorous yet deeply serious, this beautifully outrageous musical revue presented a potpourri of sketches in which a variety of Jamaica's political and cultural issues are delightfully and expertly skewered.

NY President's address

I am privileged to welcome all of you to the Kingston College Old Boy’s Association's 26th Annual Reunion and Awards Dinner, a tradition that began in 1982 when we hosted our second headmaster, Mr. Douglas Forrest.

We do not take this gathering lightly because in many ways it represents the culmination of a year’s work of all our associations and a celebration of the Fortis family.

Although our leadership may change both within the institution and on the part of the Old Boy’s Associations, our Fortis spirit has remained.

My favorite memory during ...

Lennox Graham

First, I congratulate Michael Russell and his team for another hard fought victory at the annual high school Championships.

To the entire team of student athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, management and the wider support group I say KINGSTON COLLEGE... yes we can!

I am so blessed to have been able to execute my second active tour of duty with Kingston College track and field team between 1993 and 2007.  This is something all sons of Melbourne Park and Clovelly Park dream of doing at some point in their respective lives.  My first active tour of duty with the track and field team was between 1978 and 1983.   I actually started at Kingston College in September 1975.

The School Song

Written by Vivian Virtue

Who would be truly brave must be
Men not afraid to fight and fall
Hearts that unshrinking venture forth
Obedient to the restless call
Of God and country and of truth
In burning faith and abounding work
God gives us such courageous youth
As never shall that challenge shirk.

Earl Gordon

Members of the Penn Relays contingent were graciously hosted by Merrick Foster (’88) and his family on Sunday April 26th. The group of about 30 athletes, coaches and team officials were transported from their hotel to the northeast Philadelphia home of Mr. Foster.

The unseasonably warm April afternoon provided the perfect atmosphere for a good old fashioned backyard cookout and the group was treated to the usual fair of barbecued food.

Robert Kelly, president of the New York Chapter of the Old Boys’ Association and chef for the day formally greeted the contingent. He heartily congratulated the team on winning the boys’ athletic championship for the 31st time; and implored them not to make it a one-off win, but to have this be the first of another streak of wins. The challenge was readily accepted by members of the successful team.
