“Let the festivities begin,” and so it started with the soothing sounds of DJ Wayne and his “Mi-grain” sound system fresh from Miami. This event was destined to be fantastic as it was postponed for three months and planned meticulously. The Atlanta executive board analyzed and studied all our past events and decided we needed to adopt a tight fiscal policy with an extremely low break even point for this year’s event. There were the usual preparations for the Annual Reunion and Awards Banquet, but this year we decided to design the Souvenir journal in house, employing the graphic design skills of the newsletter’s webmaster, Earl Adams. Those of us who went to Kingston College between 1959 and 1989 must remember General Science teacher, Sonia Serrant. The alumna of St. Hugh’s and Wolmers’ High School, taught at KC for 30 years. She initially taught Biology and Latin but was assigned to the Melbourne Campus in 1963 when the teaching of Latin was phased out of the curriculum. Dr. Cedric Lazarus to Head FAO’s Caribbean Bird Flu Project

Contributing editor to the KCOBA newsletter, Dr. Cedric Lazarus, has accepted a one year assignment to be the Regional Coordinator of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Avian Influenza Surveillance Project in the Caribbean. He will be stationed at the FAO office in Barbados as of Tuesday September 5th, 2006. There are 12 countries involved in the project, from Cuba and Jamaica in the north to Trinidad and Guyana in the south.

This month we have the spotlight on Integrity Children’s Fund (ICF), a relatively young organization, but one that has an impressive record of achievement serving the poor and destitute who live in communities that are largely underserved.

Daughter of KC Old Boy crowned Miss Jamaica World 2006

Miss Jamaica World 2006, Sara Lawrence, is the daughter of KC Old Boy Steve Lawrence. The 21 year-old student who wore the sash, Miss Crane Ridge Resort, will represent Jamaica at the Miss World Finals in Warsaw, Poland later this year.
In 1994, Johanna Ulett, daughter of another KC Old Boy, John Ulett, also won Miss Jamaica World. |
Kingston College Old Boys, Franklyn McDonald and Clarence ‘Ben’ Brodie, will be awarded silver and bronze medal respectively at the Institute of Jamaica’s annual Musgrave Awards ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, October 4th 2006.
The 2006 Silver Musgrave medallist, Franklyn McDonald, is being awarded for his work in environmental science. KCOB Drum Major, Ben Brodie who is the co-founder and managing editor of The News will receive a bronze medal for his work in journalism. more >>

On a Sad Note

| Dr. Cecil Taffe |

KC Old Boy, distinguished scholar and UN diplomat, Dr. Cecil Taffe, passed away on Friday August 8th 2006 at Christ Hospital, New Jersey, after a brief illness. His funeral took place on Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 at the University Chapel, Mona, Jamaica.
Dr. Taffe was a member of KC's first Schools' Challenge Quiz team. He attended the University of the West Indies where he attained BSc and PHD degrees in Zoology. He later obtained two Master of Science degrees --University of London and Harvard University-- and lectured all over the world. Some of his contemporaries are Anthony 'sticky " Allen, Louis Ruddock, Errol 'muscles 'Hewitt and Kingsley Cooper, to name a few.
